Why ten seconds is the standard
One second measures your fastest burst and almost nothing else: a single well-timed double tap can swing the result by 2 clicks per second. Sixty seconds measures endurance, and most people give up before the clock does.
Ten seconds is long enough that a lucky burst cannot dominate and short enough that fatigue has not yet set in. It is the interval most click tests use, which also makes it the one worth comparing across sites.
The other durations are here because people look for them specifically. They are ranked against their own distributions, not against the 10 second one.
Techniques, and what they cost
Normal clicking, one finger on the button, tops out around 7 to 8 clicks per second for most people.
Butterfly clicking alternates two fingers on the same button, roughly doubling the rate. It is the reason results above 12 exist.
Drag clicking exploits friction between the fingertip and the mouse shell to make the switch actuate repeatedly in one motion. It can produce results above 20 and is banned on most game servers because it is closer to exploiting the hardware than to clicking.
All three put repeated strain on the same tendons. Rates above 10 clicks per second sustained regularly are a known route to tendon irritation in the wrist and forearm.
Why the curve is not a bell
Click rate distributions have a long right tail. Most people cluster between 5 and 8 clicks per second, then a thin band of results stretches out to 15 and beyond, produced by techniques rather than by faster fingers.
That shape matters for reading your own result. The mean sits above the median because of that tail, so comparing yourself to the average understates where you actually stand. Your percentile does not have that problem, which is the reason this site leads with it.
It also means the distinction between average and good is narrow. The gap between the 50th and 75th percentile is around 1 click per second. The gap between the 95th and the 99th is several times that.
Fatigue across the run
The rate chart under your result splits the run into one second slices. Almost everyone peaks in the first two seconds and declines from there, and the size of that decline says more about your setup than your total does.
A steep decline usually means a heavy click switch. The force needed to actuate is small, but multiplied by 70 presses it becomes the limiting factor, and lighter switches show visibly flatter curves.
A flat curve with a low rate points at the opposite problem: something is capping how fast clicks are being registered rather than how fast you can produce them. Check for mouse software debounce settings set unusually high.
Questions
- Why is my percentile higher than I expected for an average-looking score?
- Because the distribution has a long tail of technique-driven results that pulls the average up. Most people are packed tightly around the middle, so a small improvement in rate moves you several percentile points.
- What is a good CPS?
- Between 6 and 7 clicks per second is average over 10 seconds. Above 9 is fast. Above 12 almost always means butterfly or drag clicking rather than ordinary clicking.
- Why is my trackpad score so much lower?
- A trackpad has to detect, debounce, and report each tap, and it cannot be pressed twice as quickly as a mechanical switch. A 1 to 2 clicks per second gap is normal, which is why trackpad results are ranked separately.
- Does clicking faster help in games?
- Up to a point. Past about 8 clicks per second, most games either cap the input rate or the extra clicks do nothing useful. Accuracy and timing matter far more than raw rate.
